Nat Young Interview on BBC Radio 4 about Home Surveillance Devices
On 15th December 2021, Nat Young, senior solicitor at Longmores, was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours about the legal issues of home surveillance devices.
Nat Young has recently acted for the successful claimant in the Ring Doorbell case between two neighbours.
It can be a complex problem for anybody using a home surveillance device ranging across issues to do with privacy, data collection and data protection. So, Nat offers a simple tip that any device owner can apply: “make sure you are not capturing anything outside your home or garden“.
Beyond that, you need to comply with data protection law. The starting point is to talk to your neighbours before fitting a device, and to discuss with them exactly what your devices are videoing and recording.
During the programme experts also talked about cyber security and warned that anybody buying home surveillance devices needs to change the default password when they install it. They recommend checking the government’s Cyber Aware website for the latest advice on how to stay secure online.
You can listen to the recording of Nat’s interview on You and Yours on BBC Sounds.
Nat also offers further advice in his article Home Security Devices and Privacy: a 21st century problem. He answers questions about the legal issues arising from home security devices and CCTV systems. Nat also explains what the law says about home security devices, what you need to do if you own one and what you need to do if you think your privacy has been affected.
