Grant for a Greenhouse and Gardening at Manor Fields Primary School
Manor Fields School Association has been awarded a grant from the Longmores Charitable Foundation so they can buy equipment for the school’s eco-friendly greenhouse and outdoor seasonal garden.
Manor Fields Primary School
Manor Fields School Association raises raise funds to provide resources and activities for Manor Fields Primary School aiming to enrich and enhance the pupils’ education and time spent at the school. The association’s usual fundraising events have been restricted by the Covid-19 pandemic so the grant will help the school complete their garden project.
The children at Manor Fields Primary school will have an opportunity to experience first hand, the journey of their food from seed to plate. They will be able to expand their understanding of the surrounding natural environment and learn how to grow their favourite fruits and vegetables. In turn, this will promote healthy eating amongst the children. The combination of the greenhouse and outdoor classroom area will enable teachers to enhance children’s learning experiences by holding lessons in the fresh air, regardless of the weather. Spending more time outdoors will also contribute to the children’s wellbeing.
A community garden
As well as gardening lessons for the school children, the garden is also used by Grove Cottage. Grove Cottage provides social and educational opportunities for adults and children of all ages who have a learning disability. They have limited outdoor space so the garden offers them valuable educational and therapeutic space.
The garden will be maintained by local volunteers bringing together multiple generations and those who may otherwise feel socially isolated.
The trustee of the Longmores Charitable Foundation were impressed by the number of local people who will benefit from the garden and hope the outside space will be useful at a time when there are so many restrictions on gatherings and socialising.
Ina White, of the Manor Fields School Association, said “The grant is very important and timely for the project, as it enables us to bring it a lot closer to completion. We, at Manor Fields School Association, are delighted to have you as our supporter and we cannot wait for your visit once the garden is complete to show you the impact the donation has made on the project”.
The school and association plan to complete the greenhouse this year and to have the outdoor garden fully functional by spring 2021.
